 Mary Irene Poos (Age 66)

Mary I. Poos quietly slipped into the arms of her Maker on the morning of July 7, 2015 at 5 a.m. Arriving on November 5, 1948, she was the 5th child in a family of eleven, born to the late Frank William and Catherine Jeanette Poos of Arlington, VA. She wa preceded in death by eldest sibling Carol A. Robinson; but is survived by four brothers, Frank J., Michael W., Thomas R., and Lawrence S. Poos; and five sisters, Laura Lauder, Catherine M. Angotti, Bernadette Poos, Ann Soldner and Denise Morris. With no children of her own, she is aunt to over 20 nieces, nephews, and “greats’; and survived by uncles, aunts, numerous cousins and second cousins. Her great curiosity and love of animals, sparked a lifelong journey as a research scientist in animal nutrition; ultimately translating into a successful career path which included: The National Academy of Science-NAS, then the FDA where she was a senior policy analyst serving with distinction as Deputy Director of Office of Nutrition Labeling and Dietary Supplements. Most recently she had been named “Acting’ Director in January 2015. She has received numerous honors, distinguished service awards, and most recently a Commissioner’s Special Citation which garnered her a White House invitation from The First Lady, as Head of the Nutrition Labeling team. CHARLES JOSEPH HAUGHNEY (Age 70)
Of Kensington, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 12, 2015 after a brief, but valiant battle with cancer. Born in Erie, PA on August 13, 1944, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1966 with a degree in Physics. Charles had over 22 years of U.S. Naval service, reaching the rank of Captain. He later spent over 17 years at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, serving as Acting Director for the last seven. Father of Evangeline Haughney and Angela Haughney. Grandfather of Alexander Pittenger; brother of Patrick (wife Juanita) Haughney, Stephen (wife Carolyn) Haughney, Diane Haughney, and Jane Haughney (husband Joseph Morrissey). A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at Holy Cross Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, MD, on Friday, July 17 at 1 p.m. Interment at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA on September 18, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Siamese Rescue Center, www.va.siameserescue.org or CRAB (Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating), www.crabsailing.org.

On Saturday, July 11, 2015, Higinia C. Banzon, passed away peacefully She was preceded by her husband, Felix R. Banzon. Born in 1935, Higinia “Jean” retired from the field of Nursing after working at hospitals in Maryland, New York, and New Jersey, caring for babies for many years as pediatric nurse.  Her talent for transforming fabric into beautiful quilts, clothes, and decorative wall hangings was well known by her friends and family, as was her love of cooking.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.  She is survived by her son Ronald Banzon, daughter-in-law Sheila Flick Banzon, and her two grandsons and a large extended family worldwide.

Charles E. Moose

Charles Eric Moose, 87, a U.S. Civil Service lithographer, died on July 9, 2015 at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, MD. He was the beloved husband of the late Betty Moose and the devoted father of Michael Moose, Margaret Swallow, Ernest Moose, Mary Jayne Register, Kevin Moose, Maureen Bobenrieth, Madeline Steffens, James Moose and the late William Moose. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A native Washingtonian, he was one of the founders of the Sportsmen Club, a group of Eastern High School graduates who, along with their wives-The Sportsettes- played cards, planned dances, and took boat rides on the Chesapeake. By the early 1960’s, he had moved his growing family to Silver Spring where he was an enthusiastic CYO football coach, horseshoe pitcher and Sunday morning breakfast maker. He moved to Riderwood Village in 2002.

Mr. Moose, who retired in 1985, worked for several federal agencies during his long tenure with the government, including many years at Ft. George Meade (now the home of the National Security Agency). One of his favorite pastimes following retirement was to take family and friends to the National Cryptologic Museum.
